FOHL Trade Deadline Preview

Never has the market been so stagnant, and never has the divide between buyers and sellers been so dramatic. The trade deadline usually is an exciting time of rapid trades and blockbusters that rock the foundation of the league. It transforms contenders into favorites and separates the strong from the weak.

Last year we saw Sault Ste Marie stake a claim to their eventual throne by acquiring Cam Dineen, Drake Rymsha and Will Bitten among others. We saw contenders like Mississauga pick up Jonah Gadjovich, Sudbury acquire Cole Fraser, London get Jordan Kyrou and the big showstopper trade where Michael DiPietro went to Saginaw.

The sheer amount of star power available, and the more than half dozen teams with a legitimate chance at the Memorial Cup made for an exciting time. Activity was at an all time high, trade talks had everyone engaged for hours.

2018 Trade Deadline

The outlook is a little more bleak a year later. If last season's deadline was a bustling metropolis, this season is shaping up to be a ghost town.

2019 Trade Deadline
That's not to say things can't change, or players won't be dealt, but the narrative that Oshawa, Ottawa, Saginaw and Windsor are the only teams competing has become less of a talking point and more of a reality. Teams in contention like London, Erie, North Bay and Sarnia are looking to, or are actively making lateral moves. Teams that could make a run like Guelph and Barrie see the future as their true window.

It's no easy task, but here's a prediction of the deals we will see at the FOHL trade deadline.

To Erie: Keeghan Howdeshell
To Sault Ste Marie: Pacey Schlueting, 5th 2019

To Guelph: Matthew Struthers, 4th 2020
To North Bay: Cameron Butler

To Windsor: Franco Sproviero
To Sarnia: Ian Lemieux, 4th 2019

To Erie: Hugo Leufvenius
To Sarnia: Cameron Tolnai, 4th 2021

To Hamilton: Aidan Dudas
To Peterborough: Nick Wong, 2nd 2020

To Ottawa: Cole Fraser
To London: 5th 2021

To Windsor: Jacob Paquette
To Kingston: 4th 2019

To Saginaw: Jordan Sambrook, Jakub Brahaney
To Kingston: Nicholas Porco, 3rd 2020
To Niagara: Austin Osmanski, 3rd 2019

So there you have it. We see a total of 8 deals go down on deadline day, with Saginaw swapping out some medicore overagers for some better talent. We see Erie decide to stop ridding the fence, they realize they only have their star goaltender for a few more months, so they spend a few pieces to really push the Western Conference. Nothing earth shattering, but will provide enough entertainment to sustain a lot of activity with the GMs.
