FOHL Players of the Month (November)

Image
November's Players of the Month brought to you by SkipTheDishes, official partner of the FOHL Player of the Month - Justin Brazeau (Ottawa 67's) The overager came alive in November, taking over the scoring lead in the league and providing a six point cushion on his next closest rival. His dominance has also carried the 67's through the month, and if he continues his torrent pace, he might finally draw the attention of NHL scouts. Undrafted through his OHL career, Brazeau is looking to get a pro contract after his season in Ottawa is over. Goaltender of the Month - Ivan Prosvetov (Erie Otters) He started to really elevate his game in late October, after the Otters shook the hockey world by dealing a certain superstar forward, and when expectations were that Erie was going to tank, that is when Prosvetov put the team on his shoulders. He's gone from being a good goalie to joining elite company in the league, and if he continues to drag the corpse of the Eri...

Pardon the Interruption

Image
Wilbon : Pardon the interruption, but I'm Mike Wilbon. Tony, a new study says it's the quality of your friendships that matter, not the quantity. So how would you rate our friendship? Kornheiser : I'm Tony Kornheiser. You consider us friends? Wilbon : Oh okay, it's like that. Kornheiser :  Welcome to PTI boys and girls! In today's episode we take a look at the comings and goings of the FOHL. With the Rise of Skywalker a month away from hitting theaters, we look at the rise of the hockey stick wielding aquatic mammals, we put an end to the #1 overall pick debate, we chat with one of the league's premier General Managers and preview the epic clash between good and evil. Rundown Erie Otters Wright/McTavish Antonio Borrelli Oshawa vs Ottawa Sellers Fortune Teller But we begin today with everyone's favorite success story in Ontario, and for that, we head down to Pennsylvania. Wilbon : I don't know why you call this a success story T...

21 Thoughts With Elliotte Friedman

Image
31  21 Thoughts with Elliotte Friedman More than half way through our third month of the season, plenty of exciting events have occurred, plenty of big plays and lots of story lines to follow. 1 . Quinton Byfield officially cracked the top 30 in scoring for the season. That might not seem like too steep an accomplishment, but he's the only rookie name among the mostly 18-19 year old and overager group. What might be more newsworthy is that scoring 21 points in 13 games is only good enough for 29th in the FOHL for scoring. It's been an offensive blitz to start the season. 2 . They did the math! Is the FOHL a higher scoring league than a comparable league? And the answer is no. Even with a ridiculous 7.27 goals being scored per game, that doesn't trump the 7.75 being scored in "comparable" leagues. So if you're feeling sorry for the goalies out there, they have it pretty good compared to elsewhere. 3 . Two of the players most responsible for ...

Hammertown: The Musical

Image
In 2015, Lin-Manuel Miranda debuted his critically acclaimed musical Hamilton. A crowd-pleasing theatrical production about American founding father Alexander Hamilton. It had months of sold out engagements, won an unprecedented eleven Tony awards, and has gone down in history as one of the all time great musicals. In contrast, and since we're keeping score, the Hamilton Bulldogs have won zero Tony's. They have zero sold out shows, they have not received any critical acclaim, but they do have one victory over the musical Hamilton. And that one victory is... one victory . One victory in the FOHL. Through fifteen games. Picture this. It's the middle of September, 2018. Bohemian Rhapsody is crushing it at the box office, the kids are listening to "In My Feelings" by Canadian icon and basketball fanguy Drake. An 0-6 Bulldogs team are hosting a red hot Ottawa 67's team. It's gonna be a blood bath. Big bodied defenseman DJ King (who?)  gets the h...

Jason Robertson: The Mandalorian

Image
A long, long time ago, in fact it was last Tuesday, in a galaxy far away, known as Hamilton's First Ontario Centre, Jason Robertson did what he does best. With the game on the line, and the Frontenacs staring down defeat, he took a rebound off a Jacob Paquette blaster point shot, and buried a rebound to tie the game and secure the point for his team. For Jason Robertson, it was just business as usual. Scoring the clutch goal wasn't personal, ending the Bulldogs chance to secure just their second win of the season in front of an excited home crowd wasn't personal, it's just simply what he does. Now sitting with 7 goals and 18 assists in 14 games, the 6'2 forward is closing in on a two-point per game pace, and is carrying an entire team on his back. Kingston is sitting nice and cozy in a post-season position, when pundits had them sinking deep into the sarlacc pit. After being a team player for three seasons with Kingston, Jason Robertson is going to b...

Way Way Too Early Mock Draft (Import Edition)

Image
In 1995, the band TLC warned the world of the perils of chasing waterfalls. One of the world's original dance-floor bangers was a parable of engaging in pursuits that would have self-destructive consequences. 7 years later, a child named Lucas Raymond would be born, and set into motion events that could change the landscape of the FOHL forever. The CHL import draft is the ultimate crapshoot in hockey. Top ranked players mixed with obscure names you have to google to even make sure they're real people. Teams taking flyers on players with potential while the "have" teams like London and Portland manage to land 1st round NHL talent with the 76th overall pick.  A lot of people don't appreciate the impact the import draft has. This most recent season we saw Guelph walk away with franchise player Marco Rossi. We saw North Bay solidify their status as contenders with UPL. We saw Flint swing for the fences and strikeout with Phillip Broberg. Looks like someon...

FOHL Players of the Month (October)

Image
October's players of the month are brought to you by SkipTheDishes, official partner of the FOHL. Player of the Month - Jason Robertson (Kingston Frontenacs) His time in Kingston may be coming to an end, but that hasn't stopped the 19 year old power forward from lightning up Leon's Centre in K-Town. Arguably the best player on the trade block this season, Robertson has the perfect mix between high-end skill and physical tools to dominate the OHL. He currently has 25 points in 14 games, and may be single handedly carrying the Frontenacs out of the basement. The return should be high whenever this game breaker gets dealt. Goaltender of the Month - Ukko Pekka-Luukkonen (North Bay Battalion)  When the CHL loosened their restrictions on import goaltenders, they probably didn't envision such a dominate force like UPL joining their ranks. He's as close to pro-ready as the league has ever seen, and the Battalion were quick to scoop him up in the Imp...
